Pictures from Mozambique

Thursday, April 21, 2011

I've been filming with a new company in Mozambique for the last few weeks. We're at the very beginning stages of a new documentary about rhino poaching. I haven't had a lot of time to snap pictures, especially of the wildlife, but here are a few that I've gotten so far...

This passed Saturday marked two months of me being here. Obviously my updates have been pretty sparse, but things have continued to stay busy.

We've pretty much wrapped up the shooting for Shamwari: A Wild Life Series 3. I've been editing segments non stop for weeks and we've made great progress on the first couple of episodes. Not sure which network it's going to yet.

Unfortunately I haven't taken very many pictures in the last month either. It's really difficult to try and find the time to put down the video camera and pull out my personal stills camera while we're shooting. I did however, put this video together of some of the things I've filmed while here:

Still having a really great time here. This has been an incredible experience that will stick with me my entire career. 80 degrees in March has been pretty nice as well.

That's all I have time for at the moment, but I'll post an update on my future plans later this week.

1 Month

Friday, February 25, 2011

It's hard to believe I've been here so long already, but today marks 1 month since I arrived. I've already done and seen so much, I can't even imagine what the rest of my time here will hold.

We've been very busy filming and editing segments. I've been in and out of the office the last two weeks, trying to get as much editing done between shooting as I can. We will most likely wrap up filming within the next couple weeks, and then it will be on to an even heavier load of editing.

As of right now I'm still not 100% sure how long I'll be here, or what I'll be doing after, but I will hopefully have a better idea sometime next week.

Until then, here are some more pictures and a video I shot this passed week.

Shamwari Game Reserve, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Monday, February 14, 2011

I have been super busy since arriving back in South Africa, but I made it here safely and am well underway working with the Shamwari Film Unit.

We are currently filming the third season of a series called Shamwari: A Wild Life. It's basically a reality show (aired on Animal Planet and ABC Australia) about what goes on here at the game reserve. Not only do we spend time filming the wildlife and going on safari drives, but we also follow a lot of the people who work on the reserve. Much of our time is spent following the rangers and wildlife vets who run the animal hospital and rehab center here. They focus on maintaining the health of the animals on the reserve, proper breeding tactics, and rehabilitating animals who have been taken out of their natural habitat. Quite a bit different than the animal hospital I'm used to working at.

I don't really have time to write much more, but here a few pictures until I get another chance to update. These are some of the things we've been filming, as well as a couple pictures of my hut.

Prey for Life

No updates since I've been back in the States. The res of my trip was great. The film festival was awesome, and after that finished I spent some time in Cape Town. Great city. Now I'm back home trying to find ways to go back.

In the meantime... I uploaded a low quality version of my video here http://vimeo.com/andrewjuhl . I ripped it off of my ipod, so it's small and not the best. I'll have a better quality version up eventually.

Also, some pictures from my trip are on my flickr page, which is linked at the top of this page.

Wild Talk Pt. II

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

I don't have time to make a long post because I'm getting ready to leave for free dinner (overlooking the Indian Ocean (with a commisioning editor from NatGeo)), but I wanted to say thanks for all the great wishes from everyone. I haven't had time to send out individual emails really, but the support I've received from family and friends has been amazing.

Wild Talk has been awesome so far. I sat in on several interesting seminars today, and met a lot of important people. My film is being screened tomorrow and obviously I'm super excited. (And maybe slightly nervous)

So thanks again everyone, and hopefully next time I see you all I'll have great news.

Film Screening

Monday, April 20, 2009 | |

So we finished editing this week. After staring at my film for 2 straight weeks I wasn't really sure how I felt about it, but we had our screening last night and it went really well. I am extremely happy with the outcome of my film, especially since it was the first time I have shot wildlife. I got a LOT of positive feedback, as did the rest of the group. The course director has said over & over that we have produced the most impressive group of films in the WFA's 3 year history.

So after the screening we celebrated, obviously. Then we got up early this morning and drove into Johannesburg to catch a plane to Durban, where I am now at the WildTalk festival. The WFA has a great reputation here, and they normally screen past student's films, but the WFA course director decided to pull those films and showcase ours instead. So Wednesday @ noon my film is going to be played for thousands of people in the industry, including many people from National Geographic and Discovery. I am pumped. This is a huge opportunity.

So we will be here for the next 3 days, attending lectures and workshops, networking, etc.

I am going to wrap this up because a producer from NatGeo just walked by and I need to go introduce myself.

More later!
